The Making of “Play Me a Crunch” – A Very PMAC Story

In April 2023, one of the exciting auction prizes at PMAC’s annual spring fundraiser, Spring Fever for the Arts, was the opportunity to design a custom bar at Enna Chocolate, where the award-winning bean-to-bar chocolate maker and owner Enna Grazier is PMAC CEO Russ Grazier’s sister-in-law.

Steve Ritchie, Co-Founder & CFO at Proof+Geist and PMAC Board Member, was the winning bidder. Steve, his wife Nicole, and two daughters (Sophie, age 23, and Manu, age 20) helped design the chocolate bar’s flavor palette over the summer. They started by sampling a variety of different single origin chocolates, ultimately selecting a 75% dark chocolate from the Philippines. They then tried various combinations of nuts, seeds, sugars, and other “inclusions” to find the perfect components: cornflakes, raw sugar, and sea salt.

“We had a wonderful time with Enna, learning about and tasting what goes into making a chocolate bar. It’s an art form in and of itself, and we’re excited by what she helped us create.”

Sophie Ritchie also designed the art for the packaging, a meaningful experience for the PMAC Visual Arts Teaching Artist and former PMAC student: “I grew up playing the saxophone in PMAC’s Teen Jazz Band, so it was really cool to pay tribute to that with my art. I’m excited to add a personal flair to this chocolate bar as PMAC celebrates 20 years!”

When it came time to package the bars, PMAC pitched in to help. A team of volunteers spent an evening wrapping hundreds of chocolate bars in foil, packaging them, and affixing stickers. It was a true collaborative effort to get these bars ready to share with the world.
